John's, motel-style rooms, best for those who want the gambling close at hand. Castle Harbour Hotel & Casino, perched on a hill overlooking St. Blue Waters Beach Hotel, small-inn charm, fine beach and good food, including barbecues twice weekly. Halcyon Cove, luxurious surroundings, good sports facilities and new casino. Half Moon Bay, wellappointed hotel with half-mile-long beach, tennis courts and golf course (Winter rates for this and the following hotels were not available at press time). Lodging Curtain Bluff, small hotel whose spacious rooms have private terraces, popular with sea-sports lovers and those who want to be pampered by a caring staff ($240 MAP for two). John's, the capital, is a town known for its morning market and the architecture of the Anglican Cathedral. Today, the economy of newly independent Antigua mixes tourist hotels around its exquisite coastline with agriculture, some sugar and, increasingly, cotton, in the lush interior. His home and dockyard at English Harbour on the south coast have been restored as they were in the late 18th century. Antigua ANTIGUA DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM (21) Antigua in the Leeward Islands was once the Caribbean base for Lord Nelson and the English fleet. Cul de Sac, pleasant seaside setting and reputation for good food. Restaurants Rendezvous Bay Hotel, lobster is the house specialty. Winter on Anguilla is still a relative bargain, since most places have the same rates the year round. Malliouhana, new luxury duplex villas that can be rented as one- or two-story units ($110, $250 and $450 CP). Seahorse, apartments overlooking Rendezvous Bay ($330 EP a week for one-bedroom unit). Cul-de-Sac, modern and comfortable units ($100 EP per apartment). Lodging Rendezvous Bay Hotel, congenial and informal with 23 rooms set on a bay ($85 AP for two). Gleaming beaches, snorkeling and other water sports and a virtual absence of night life are the hallmarks of the island. Claire Walter Anguilla ANGUILLA INFORMATION CENTER (30) This 16-mile-long stretch of sand and scrub appeals to travelers yearning for the unspoiled Caribbean.
